This is a one week program to teach students about Careers in the Highway Construction Industry. We explain how to apply to the five Highway Construction Trade Unions as well as offering students the opportunity to earn certifications in working towards these careers. We offer hands on instruction as well as field trips.
Funding is provided by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. There is no cost to your school for instructors, materials or transportation.
Program Components
- Instruction is provided by working professionals from the New England Laborers’ Training Trust Fund who impart real life experiences
- Four full days of instruction at your school and a one day field trip to an apprenticeship training center, construction site or DOT maintenance facility
- Students receive a hardhat, safety glasses, work gloves, safety vest and equipment bag.
- Ideal participant: a senior who is entering the work force upon graduation
- Participation is limited to 20 students per week
- Classroom requirements: audiovisual equipment and access to the internet every day, shop space Friday morning
- Program can be delivered in person or virtually.
Student Benefits
- This is a Registered Pre-Apprenticeship Program. Graduates receive 30 hours of credit towards the first year's class work requirement if accepted into the Laborers' Apprenticeship Program
- Outstanding program graduates are eligible for a four week paid co-op with a highway construction or maintenance company or organization
- Program graduates are eligible for support services including notification of employment opportunities, resume review and interview preparation
- Program graduates are eligible to apply for Commercial Driver's License Class B (CDL - B) training school scholarships
