Operating Engineers

Operating Engineers operate and maintain heavy construction equipment such as cranes, excavators, loaders, pile drivers, and hoists. They use this equipment to excavate, move, or grade earth, erect structural steel, and pour concrete or other hard surface paving materials. 

Operating Engineers Local 4 JATC (Eastern MA)

 Length of Apprenticeship: 4 years 600 hours of classroom training and 8,000 hours of on-the job training.  

Basic Requirements

  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Be capable of performing the work of the trade 
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Reside within Local 4’s jurisdiction. Check your eligibility.
  • Be a citizen or otherwise meet the requirements of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.
  • Must have a driving record that won’t prohibit you from obtaining a CDL license.
  • Have a valid motor vehicle driver’s license in your possession.
  • Have a Social Security card in your possession.
  • Have an appointment scheduled through our office.

Operating Engineers

Operating Engineers Local 98 JATC (Western MA, Western NH, and VT)

 Length of Apprenticeship: 4 years 600 hours of classroom training and 8,000 hours of on-the job training.  

Basic Requirements

  • Be 18 years of age or older to be registered as an apprentice
  • 17 years of age at time of application for high school seniors only -must also have parent/guardian sign application
  • Physically capable of performing the work of the trade
  • Reside within the jurisdiction of Local 98
  • Be a citizen or meet the requirements of immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986

Application Process

In Person Only: 

Applications will only be given to the person applying for the program that provides a valid driver's 

license, social security card and high school diploma or equivalent. Be prepared to stay and complete the entire application. You will not be allowed to leave the 1.U.O.E. Local 98 office with the application. Applications will not be mailed. We will be making copies of the items listed below. 

  • Have a valid motor vehicle driver's license in your possession
  • Have a Social Security card in your possession
  • Have a High School diploma, GED, High School Transcript, HiSET in your possession (unless senior graduating in current year)
  • Have employment history with contact information (current and previous)
  • Have personal references
  • Take a general aptitude pass or fail test a few weeks after the application period


 

When the program is closed please call our office at 413-998-3230 ext. 113 to be put on the list to be notified for the next Apprenticeship Program. Unfortunately, we are not permitted to mail out applications to be filled out, it must be done in person, at our office.

Once all of the applications are in, we will then schedule a testing session for each of the applicants. The test is a standardized test consisting of Reading Comprehension, Mathematics, and Skills Aptitude sections. This is a general knowledge assessment test.

After the testing phase of the process is completed, we will ask the applicants to come back one more time to interview with the trustees. This is your chance to really tell them why you should be chosen for this program.

The entire process takes about a few months and the economy does influence how many individuals we can take in at each program opening.
